Couples Therapy

Much of my clinical training is in working with premarital and married couples. When it comes to the marital relationship, I know that it can be difficult to navigate. Even the best and most compatible couples sometimes find themselves in the swamp of resentment, disconnection, frustration, sadness, hopeless, and sometimes, utter despair. For over 15 years I have researched, taught at the university level and in the community, and worked with couples and families in therapy. Over these enriching experiences, I have come to understand that much of the struggle is due to being caught in negative patterns of interaction and, more specifically, a lack of emotional safety to express their deepest fears, desires, and hopes. I have also come to know that with a committed couple, the right kind of therapy and a compassionate therapist, there is great hope.

In working with couples, I predominantly use Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy (EFT) which I have received extensive training in and I have attained certification. EFT is based on the theory of attachment and postulates that we are hard-wired to connect to people and to form close, loving, and secure relationships. When those relationships struggle and we long for closer connection and reconnection, we exhibit maladaptive behaviors (e.g., blame, criticism, withdraw, shutting down, etc.). EFT helps couples get out of their negative patterns of interaction and understand the deeper, softer, more vulnerable emotions that are driving those patterns and build an emotionally safer, more connected relationship.

EFT has been found to be the most effective approach for helping couples heal their struggling relationship and research has shown it be successful for 7 out of 10 couples. I have found great success with couples using EFT.

I am currently working on a research project on the transition from sexual abstinence to sexual activity for LDS couples. The transition to becoming sexually activity can be a difficult shift for couples emotionally, spiritually, and physically. Many come into marriage having little to no knowledge about sexual intimacy which is one of the most beautiful and important parts of marriage. This is an exciting line of research that I hope will lead to helping LDS couples make that transition better.

If you are engaged to be married and would like to be a participate, you can earn up to $40 by sharing your experience. Please get in touch with me below or contact me at to inquire about participation in the study. Thank you.
